Long tables, always
Round tables are efficient. Long tables are memorable. In an Ibiza garden a single 30-metre table under string lights does more for the evening than any centrepiece.
The formula
- Natural linen in oatmeal, chalk or terracotta
- Low candles in quantity — never anything that blocks a face
- One repeated floral gesture rather than twelve different ones
- Ceramic over crystal; the island is not a ballroom
- Menus printed on heavy uncoated paper that survives a breeze
The details people notice
Weighted linen so it does not lift. Ice buckets within reach of every four guests. Something to eat on the table before the first course arrives. Shade until the sun drops.
If the table looks beautiful at seven and unusable at nine, it was styled for the photographer rather than the guests.
